Dr Michael Mbaogu has a keen interest in rural health, and is focused on bettering the health outcomes for people living in North West Queensland. He trained as a GP in the United Kingdom, and practised there and in Canada, before moving to Australia
He holds fellowships in General Practice in all 3 countries. Since moving to Australia in 2008 Dr Mbaogu has worked as a General Practitioner in Outer Metropolitan, Regional, Rural and Remote Medical Centres.
Dr Mojisola Fakiyesi worked at the Mount Isa Hospital and GP Practices in Port Douglas and Mossman prior to joining the Mount Isa Medical Centre. She has an interest in Women's Health. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, DRANZCOG. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Child Health from the University of Sydney/Wesley Hospital, DCH. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, FRACGP.
Dr Moji is married and has two beautiful girls. She loves Running, Cooking and watching Netflix. She is a person of Faith.
Dr Rinesh Maharaj moved to Mount Isa from Ireland in 2017. He graduated Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics from the University College Dublin, Ireland. He loves Rural and Remote Medicine. He has a special interest in Emergency Medicine.
Dr Rinesh Maharaj is organised and conscientious. He has a strong work ethic. He is attentive, Patient and Professional.
Dr Mark Edwards graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering, BEng fromThe University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. He later studied Medicine and Surgery at The University of London (St. George's) UK, graduating Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS.
Dr Edwards is a former British Army officer (CAPTAIN) and Lynx helicopter pilot with over 850 hours on single and twin turbine helicopters and fixed wing light aircraft. He is a member of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and Royal Australian College of Physicians.
He has interests in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Rural Health, Occupational Medicine including Aviation Medicine.
He holds a couple of Pilot Licences. He enjoys Windsurfing, Sports and Adventure Training. He has a German Shepherd called Bruce.
Dr Nicole Carmody completed her medical training at the University of Notre Dame in Western Australia and has long standing passion for rural, remote and Aboriginal health. She has been based in Mount Isa for the past five years working in Mount Isa Base Hospital, prior to this, working across the Kimberley Region, WA and Arnhem Land, NT.
In addition to Medicine, Dr Carmody worked for over a decade as a Paramedic, gaining extensive experience in Pre--hospital and Emergency care. She is a Trainee with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine ( ACRRM) and holds advanced skills training in both Anaesthesia and Emergency Medicine.
Outside of work, Dr Carmody enjoys spending time with her two Dogs, Maggie and George.
Dr Mehrzad Afsari started working at the Practice in March 2025. He holds a Doctor of Medicine Degree. He has a keen interest in Family Medicine.
Professor Richard Hays, with qualifications in both clinical medicine and medical education, has a strong record of achievement in research and scholarship related to training of medical practitioners, measurement of performance, rural health service delivery and workforce, and program evaluation and accreditation.

He has had roles in the development of several medical education programs, including new medical schools in Australia (JCU), the United Kingdom (Keele), Ireland (Limerick), Canada (Northern Ontario and Northern British Columbia), and in South-East Asia. He has also participated in many international medical education quality assurance reviews in Australia, New Zealand, the Western Pacific region, Asia, Europe and the UK. He has been awarded about AUD 3 million in competitive research and development grants and has published about 100 research papers, 150 other journal articles, 16 book chapters and 9 books, primarily on assessment, curriculum design and educational quality assurance. He still loves leading change based on medical education development and remains in part-time clinical practice.
Administrative expertise
Richard has been a head of school or Dean at four Universities, around major educational reforms.
In 2024, his wife and he relocated to Mount Isa, where they both initially worked at the Mount Isa Hospital.
Before moving to Mount Isa, he gained experience at several South East QLD Hospitals, including the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queensland Children's Hospital.
